About this Bloom

Bank's Grevillea | Grevillea banksii |  red silky oak |  Byfield waratah

Endemic to coastal, eastern Australia, Grevillea banksii is a very showy variant of grevillea and is parent to many new hybrids that find their place in Australian and international gardens. Because of its long flowering season and brilliant, over-saturated blooms grevilleas are popular with gardeners. G. banksii plants introduced to Hawaii and Madagascar have been found to have thrived and even naturalised in their new environments.

Grevilleas are named for The Right Honourable Charles Francis Greville, a close friend of famous botanist Sir Joseph Banks. Greville, a politician in the late 1700s, was a known patron of botany and a co-founder of the Royal Horticultural Society.

Contemporary uses of Grevillea banksii include planting as a windbreak for coffee and tea plantations as well as being grown as a honey tree (a tree that harbours bees and honey) and a source of timber. Cuttings, agriculturally, are also used as goat fodder.

This particular species has been found to contain a toxic compound within its flowers and seeds. These toxins can cause contact dermatitis – the same affliction as that experienced on contact  with the North American plant, poison ivy. Bird-lovers need not worry though, it remains an especially popular plant for native wildlife who feast on the sweet nectar throughout its glorious flowering season.

About this Series

The first series from the Lalleuca studio, Tracey draws influence from centuries of scientific botanical exploration and combines it with the tenets of Pop Art: bold colour, strong form and an aesthetic that commands attention. Each work is a marriage between story and design, between information and colour, each work celebrates the plant and encourages the collector to learn and engage with bright, unbridled joy.

About Colour

Every effort has been made to ensure that the colour tones represented here reflect the tones in the real artwork. There are however, variances between display screens across different devices so the artwork may not display exactly accurately on your device. If this is a concern to you it is best to email before purchase for advice on colour.

Original v. Giclée

The original silk screen works are collectible bespoke artworks. They are the largest of the range and each are made by hand. The nature of the process encourages each print to have its own personality and difference. No two artworks are the same. The colours in these artworks are unparalleled, as is the variance in sheen and overlay. Each original is embossed with the studio stamp, numbered and labelled by hand and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

The Giclée Art Prints are the next best thing after an original. Whilst they are replicas and have larger editions, their price point makes them more affordable to an entry level collector. The inks used are pigment inks and the paper is archival; framed behind glass these prints will retain their vibrancy for decades.
