bladder vetch, Swainsona colutoides, bladder senna
Swainsona colutoides is a native Australian legume that has adapted to a variety of soils. It especially thrives in typically harsh conditions. The dormant seeds of the bladder vetch are reliant on fire for germination — many of Australia’s flora has evolved in response to natural bushfires in this way.
The bladder vetch is one of a group of flowers that begins its bloom in Western Australia in winter with a bold purple and magenta show.
